To ensure your commercial kitchen fire suppression system is fully functional if needed, federal and state regulations require facilities to properly inspect components of their systems, including the testing and maintaining of exhaust hoods, filters, and kitchen hood nozzles. ABCO can help you with all of your periodic maintenance routines.

According to NFPA 17A, all commercial kitchen fire suppression systems are required to be serviced by professional, fire safety technicians every six months. Our certified technicians test and inspect your entire kitchen fire suppression system, ensuring proper functioning of the system, as well as conformance to standards required to pass code enforcement inspections and insurance audits.

These service appointments include the inspection and testing of all actuation and control components, including:

  • Link line, detectors, and actuators
  • Appliance, duct, and plenum nozzles and nozzle blow off caps
  • Tightness of piping
  • Pressurized and non-pressurized tanks
  • Actuators and control components
  • Remote pull station
  • Cylinders and regulator
  • Electrical interlocks, as well as all other mechanical and electrical devices

In addition to having your equipment serviced every 6 months, checks are also required to ensure your equipment properly functions day-to-day and that any potential issues are caught before they become hazardous. Hydro testing is required every 12 years by both the NFPA, manufacturer’s instructions, as well as insurers. It’s necessary to ensure the tank containing the chemical fire suppression agent can withstand the increased pressure needed to effectively discharge the chemicals in the event of a fire.

To perform this test, we remove the tank from service, empty it of its chemicals, and fill it with water or oil. We then reseal the tank and pressurize it to 2-3 times its operating pressure for at least 60 seconds. In order to pass the test, the tank must be able to hold this pressure. If leaks are discovered, or the tank is otherwise weakened, the tank must be replaced, as the suppression system won’t work properly with a compromised tank.

ANSUL® systems also require hydro testing of the regulator, hose, and replace the cartridge. It’s essential to keep up with your system’s hydro testing – not only to stay up to code, but to ensure your fire suppression system is in working order. If you have a faulty tank, you have no fire suppression system.
